Case in point · Maroon Bells, Denver

Maroon Bells, painted to give a small backyard its distance back

The couple who own this house have a personal connection to Maroon Bells, so that is the view that went on the wall. Their yard is small and the parking garage behind it presented a tall blank wall at close range, so painting distance onto it was the entire idea: the peaks, the conifers and the still water below carry your eye past the wall rather than stopping at it. The yard reads as a larger space now, which is what they were hoping for.

They wanted a naturalistic landscape and were wary of strong color taking a small yard over. The restrained palette was our recommendation for exactly that reason. Held-back values do the spatial work quietly, so the mural opens the space instead of competing for attention inside it, and the whole image is carried by value rather than hue. That is the harder way to paint a landscape and the right one here.

The surface was heavily textured garage siding, which drinks paint and needs a different hand than drywall. Four painting days across two weekends, worked entirely from a ladder. The door and window are absorbed into the composition rather than worked around: the door reads as forest, the window sits in the treeline.

Building-scale work, installed rather than painted in place

Not every exterior gets painted on the wall. Large facade work is often painted onto Crezone panels in the studio and installed complete, which keeps the weather off the schedule and the scaffolding off your building for weeks at a time. Two of these have been outside through Canadian winters and are still holding.

The Belonging Action mural, two large faces built from many smaller marks, installed high on the Harbour Centre facade in Vancouver

Belonging Action, Vancouver

24 by 32 feet on the Harbour Centre facade, for the City of Vancouver. Ninety young people contributed stories about belonging, and the painting was built from them. Acrylic on Crezone panels, installed complete.

A large portrait mural installed on an exterior wall at Brescia University in London, Ontario

Brescia University, Ontario

16 by 24 feet for the university's hundredth anniversary, completed in 2020. A hundred and fifty students and alumni contributed stories from a century of the institution. Panels again, and six winters outside so far.

A water-themed street mural running the length of a city block, being painted by neighbours and local businesses

St George Rainway, Vancouver

A water piece running a full block of road surface, painted with the businesses and institutions along it. Street-grade paint on asphalt, which is its own discipline again.

The reason this belongs on a page about your building: between masonry, block, metal, textured siding, panel systems and road surface, there is not much left that we have not had to prepare, prime and hold paint on.

Built to last outside

What goes into an exterior that keeps looking new

  • Surface assessment before quoting. Masonry, previously coated metal and weathered siding each need different preparation
  • Full preparation. Cleaning, repair, priming and sealing appropriate to the substrate
  • UV-stable paint systems chosen for Colorado sun at altitude
  • Anti-graffiti clear coat as an option on reachable walls, so tagging and road grime wash off without touching the artwork
  • Weather contingency written into the schedule, with the timeline built around real working windows
  • Maintenance guidance so you know what the wall needs and when
